Who can use it

Manage ABN Connections can be used by:

  • the associates of a business
  • anyone authorised to act on behalf of a business.

The associates of a business include anyone listed as an associate in the Australian Business Register (ABR), for example,  a business owner, director, partner, or trustee. However, sole traders may prefer to use ATO online services for individuals and sole traders.

If you're an associate of a business you should continue to use Access Manager to manage or remove accesses and permissions to your business information.

If you wish to authorise someone to act on behalf of your business (such as an employee) you can set their permissions using Access Manager.

Before you connect an ABN

To use Manage ABN Connections you need to:

Note: If you create a myGov account and link to the ATO, you'll receive most personal ATO mail (and business ATO mail if you’re a sole trader) through your myGov Inbox. If you use a tax or BAS agent, we recommend that you discuss this with your agent before linking to ATO. If you link to Centrelink or Medicare, this won’t change the delivery of your ATO mail.

Troubleshooting errors

If you've experienced an error trying to connect an ABN to your myGov account and are an associate of the business, you may need to check your details match what is listed in the ABR.

If you've been authorised to act on behalf of the business, such as an employee, you may need to check that your first name and last name in your registration email matches your myGov profile.

Connect from myGov

If you're an associate of a business, you can connect from myGov by following these steps.

  1. log in to myGov
  2. go to Account settings
  3. under General settings select Manage ABN Connections
  4. click on Connect an ABN. You can connect using either your personal details (ABN and personal TFN) or your existing AUSkey and password. If you connect using your AUSkey and password you must be using the USB or machine your AUSkey is installed on. Once connected you'll no longer need to use your AUSkey.
  5. choose to connect an ABN using your personal details or AUSkey and click on Start connection process
  6. follow the prompts
  7. once the ABN is connected you can access government online business services (for example, the Business Portal). When you're on the service's log in screen, choose myGov from the log in options, and sign in using your myGov details
  8. if you have more than one ABN that you would like to connect, select Connect another ABN in the Manage ABN Connections screen and repeat step 4 onwards.

Authorising others to act on behalf of your business

If you're a business associate and would like to authorise someone to act on behalf of your business, you can grant them authorisation using AUSkey Manager. To do this you'll need:

  • administrator access
  • the full legal name of the person you're authorising
  • their email address.

If the person you'd like to authorise already has an AUSkey they can use it to link their myGov account to your ABN. To authorise someone who doesn't have an existing AUSkey:

  1. log in to AUSkey Manager
  2. go to Register new AUSkey and fill in the details
  3. confirm the details you've entered are correct. Their first and last name must match the details on their myGov account. You should also ensure that you have the correct email address and that the person being authorised can still access it
  4. you'll receive a message confirming that your application has been submitted.

Note: The person you're authorising will receive an email titled Download and install your AUSkey, advising they've been approved to access government online services for the business. They'll need to follow the link in the email to complete the registration to connect an ABN.

After the person you're authorising has finished linking your ABN to their myGov account, you'll need to set their permissions. As an associate of a business you must manage permissions using Access Manager.
