Update your client’s ABN details

It's your client’s responsibility to maintain their Australian business number (ABN) details.

They must update their details within 28 days of becoming aware of changes.

The fastest way to update your client's details is online through the ABR's Tax professional's services using myGovID or an AUSkey. You must have already linked to your client through ATO Online services for agents or the Tax Agent Portal.

All changes made to your client's ABN will take effect immediately if done through the Tax professionals services.

AUSkey will be retired in March 2020. Try myGovID and Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM) – a simpler and more secure way to login. Find out if you're ready to start using myGovID and RAM.

What can't be updated

The following can't be updated:

  • business names
  • legal names for individuals and sole traders who need to contact the ATO directly
  • legal names for companies registered with Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC).

Name changes made by the ATO and ASIC will update the ABR.

If you're unable to update your client's details using the above link, lodge a form through ATO Online services for agents or the Tax Agent Portal. You can also contact us by phone or mail.
